The tiarellas in my previous garden required very little attention and could largely be left to grow on their own. Also called Dead Nettle, this tough, low-growing perennial makes an. Ground Cover Thymes are not only beautiful and soft to walk on, they are also the perfect way to keep the ground cool and conserve moisture. Based on my experience, it should be grown in full or partial shade or light-dappled sun. Wooly Thyme is drought tolerant once established and is a great bee forage plant.I have underplanted it beneath trees, roses and other tall shrubs without issue.A well-known and popular foliage plant.I’ve grown tiarella as a weed suppressor and have seen it thrive in shaded areas of several gardens. Sedums can give you the look you want - they just wont have the thyme smell. But it is very slow growing in the ground (fast growing in a pot) and gets buried by everything - leaves, other plants etc. My recommendation is “Jeepers Creepers”, a runner that spreads up to 75cm, is scented and produces cream and reddish flowers. Handles deep shade and moderate foot traffic. There are two types of tiarella clump-forming and runners.įlowers, often white, appear on spiky upright stems in the spring and early summer. Green dense foliage covers ground quickly before turning rustic brown in late summer and dying back completely by late autumn new growth then reappears reliably each spring. Tiarella is another popular weed-suppressing perennial that flourishes in shaded parts of the garden. They are likely to spread over time and colonise the space. I’ve seen aconites thrive in woodlands throughout the south of the UK but I would only consider this plant if I had a garden big enough, which I don’t.

If you're already angry at me, stop reading because I will not be gentle.įor starters we have the male protagonist, Yukiteru (or just Yuki). Did it raise even more questions - most of which remain unanswered - and present to us an INCREDIBLY STUPID twist later? OH YES. Did it make sense? Well, yes, at least until the anime began to blatantly make shit up on the spot. The biggest twist in the whole story, which unfolds in the last few episodes, took me by surprise. Remember what I said about there being a lot of predictable twists? I kinda lied. A shame, really, because the anime IS able to create a good, creepy atmosphere at times (ex.: the end of episode 3). Since we're talking about the atmosphere, have I mentioned that some details in crucial moments are overlooked, which obliterates the immersion? Empty hospitals, incompetent cops, silent 's the little things that can make or break the mood. Even in the more lighthearted scenes it's not funny. It really kills the atmosphere and it's not funny. It's astonishing how everyone can easily get away from anything.Īnother problem with this anime is its bad habit of throwing in bits of humor in the middle of serious moments. Normally the media would be all over a series of bombings, massacres, etc. Speaking of insulting, this show has a nasty tendency to have its world just forget about some of the big events related to the diary holders. Many battles are over within a minute and are so basic it's insulting. When you've got tools as powerful as those, you'd think there'd be gambits just piling up on each other, but no. The whole concept of using Future Diaries to outsmart opponents in deadly, tense battles is BARELY explored, plus the battles themselves seldom involve complexity. Many questions are left unanswered, some of the writing choices are just plain stupid, half of the characters have a very low IQ and, for a mystery, there aren't that many twists, and those the anime DOES have are often predictable. Thing is, Mirai Nikki is a shounen trying (and failing) to be a seinen thus, it lacks the maturity and depth needed to handle the kind of story it offers. While the premise is amazing, the story & script are very poorly written. I'm sorry, but her voice was annoying and hearing that infamous "Yukki!" every god damn minute was painful. Voice acting-wise, everyone does a solid, consistent job, except for Yuno's seiyuu. The OPs and EDs are also very nice, with the first OP being particularly awesome. Most of the tracks are somewhat memorable and fit their scenes well. Some characters look OK, while others are so ridiculous it makes the anime seem/feel less serious than it should be, which is NOT a good thing for a thriller/mystery. As for character designs, it's pretty hit-and-miss. The art and animation in Mirai Nikki are, for the most part, rather good, Let's begin with the positive aspects of this show. Unfortunately, after an excellent first episode, this series began to get worse and worse by the end of it all, it had become nothing but a huge disappointment. So naturally, when I heard about Mirai Nikki's premise, I was greatly looking forward to it. Survival games have always been one of my favorite kinds of stories. I'll mark them but if you haven't watched this yet, proceed with caution. Notice: this review will contain a few spoilers. With no other options, Yukiteru and Yuno must use their cellphones-now called "Future Diaries"-to survive this unforgiving battle royale. After spending the day benefiting from this new asset, Yukiteru learns that his classmate Yuno Gasai possesses a similar diary.Īs the two team up to defeat an odd pursuer and head back to their respective homes, Deus Ex Machina explains that they-alongside 10 other contestants-have been drawn into a survival game whose victor will become the deity's successor. While initially dismissing it as a coincidence, he slowly realizes that the incidents written in his phone actually take place in the near future. One day, Yukiteru wakes up and discovers that certain events of his day are preemptively displayed on his cellphone. Despite having no friends at school, Yukiteru is frequently seen talking to his supposedly imaginary friends Deus Ex Machina, the god of time and space and Deus' servant, Mur Mur. Yukiteru Amano is a shy middle schooler who regularly keeps track of what he does in his daily life by writing down all of his activities on his phone-a digital diary. The nest is often placed against a log or rock. Nests are a flattened grassy area well concealed among dense vegetation. Courtship displays include head dips, puffing up of contour feathers, and spreading of the tail feathers. Males are aggressive when courting, and often fight each other. It is now unusual to see more than 20 quail in a single covey.Ĭalifornia quail are not considered to have any conservation or economic impacts, but are hunted on a limited scale. 1920s Canterbury, when coveys in excess of 100 birds were frequently recorded. Examples of good quail habitat include bracken, tussock grass, matagouri, gorse, blackberry, tutu and lupinĬalifornia quail are abundant throughout their range, though they have apparently declined compared to e.g. They frequent the rough scrubby edges of rivers, inlets, forests, roads and rural gardens. The preferred habitat for California quail is uncultivated open shrubland. They are uncommon or absent in Southland, the Southern Alps, the West Coast and the Chatham Islands. They spread rapidly, and are now most numerous from Northland to the Waikato, inland Bay of Plenty, coastal Wairarapa, Nelson/Marlborough, North Canterbury and Banks Peninsula. The first release in New Zealand was at Papakura in 1862 with later releases in Nelson, Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago. They have been introduced to most continents as game birds. Similar species: the brown quail is smaller and browner, with intricate patterning on the back, and lacks a head plume.Ĭalifornia quail are native to western USA from Oregon to the Baja Peninsula. Chicks make a high whistle, alerting parents to their location Other calls include foraging grunts, sharp urgent tut-tut warnings and soft tup-tup sounds, possibly location guides. The calling bird is usually perched slightly above the surrounding area, e.g on a log or post. It is more accurately rendered as ‘qua-quergo’. Voice: the distinctive 3-note male crow is described in a variety of entertaining ways (‘Tobacco’, ‘McPherson’, ‘Chi- ca-go’ etc.). Their legs and bill are black and sturdy, with the bill being slightly hooked.įoraging quail pace sedately, but when disturbed they run at speed, their feet a blur of movement, or burst into flight with noisy, rapid wingbeats. California quail have short, rounded wings and a relatively long tail. Both sexes have fine speckling on the nape, which is bolder in the male. The female’s crest plume is much smaller than the male’s. Immature birds are similar to the female but a lighter brown. The female is slightly smaller, duller and browner, with some streaking on the neck and a more subdued scalloping on the belly, but with equally bold streaking on the flanks. The breast is blue-grey and the lower belly cream to rust brown with distinctive black scalloping, which merges into strong, pale streaks on the dark brown flanks. Males have a black chin and cheeks edged with white, and separate white ‘eyebrows’ join on the forehead. The male call, often represented as ‘ Chi-ca-go’, is distinctive and diagnostic.Ĭalifornia quail are stocky, predominantly grey and brown, with a diagnostic forward-curling black plume rising erect from the top of their heads. In autumn, quail gather in large coveys to feed and roost together. The young are numerous and able to fly at a young age, but have a low survival rate. The female is duller in colour with a less obvious plume. The male has a striking black face bordered with white, and a conspicuous top-knot or plume. They are common in open shrublands throughout most of the country. California quail are small, plump introduced game birds. See-we estimated that for nothing.īut here comes the best part. Since both the total time and the total distance depend on this yard distance, it doesn't factor into the average speed. Notice something here? The yard distance doesn't matter (it cancels). I can put these two estimates together to get the total saving time. Just to be clear, with this notation that means the real yard distance is somewhere between 50 meters and 150 meters. I have no idea where this mansion is, so I'm just going to guess the distance is 100 +/- 50 meters. Let me call this d y (for distance to the yard). I am going to be using this for all my estimates. The "+/-" means "plus or minus," to display the range of uncertainty. In order to accommodate this range of speeds, I am going to use a detonation velocity of 6000 +/- 3000 meters per second. The slowest detonation velocity is from ammonium nitrate with a speed of 2700 m/s and the highest (DDF) is around 10,000 m/s. Luckily, Wikipedia has a table of detonation velocities. The speed of an expanding shockwave is called the detonation velocity. It's somehow connected to his nemesis, Apocalypse-it's not some conventional chemical-based explosive. So, just how fast is an explosion? Of course this is no ordinary explosion. That's how much time Quicksilver has to get everyone out. But still-the total time has to be the time it takes for the shockwave from the explosion to expand to the outside yard. Also, he can't see the explosion since it's inside the mansion. He can't possibly hear it because the sound would travel with the shockwave. Quicksilver seems to (somehow) notice the explosion right when it starts inside the mansion. Let's start with the easiest estimation-the time. the time he spends just making silly gestures and playing with stuff. The number of trips he makes in and out of the X-Men Mansion. The total time it takes Quicksilver to save all these people.
